Turtles have long been very popular pets and the most well known would have to be the red eared slider but there are other breeds that are gaining popularity as pets.

A disadvantage the poor sliders suffered was that they were readily available and pet stores kept them in overcrowded conditions, did not give them healthy, spacious environments to live in and sent them home with people in tiny plastic bowls.

This led to poorly cared for baby turtles that soon died or suffered stunted growth.

Unfortunately this still occurs as people have no idea what it takes to care for a turtle properly in terms of feeding requirements, living conditions and healthcare. Aquatic turtles still often die due to stress and neglect.

Even if the new family cares for the turtle properly they still die due to stress suffered at the pet shop. Turtle care is not rocket science and aquatic turtles are fairly easy to deal with if you follow the following short guide on how to look after turtles.

Turtle Housing

Aquatic turtles need elaborate housing which includes regular exposure to UV lights or natural sunlight. Lights made for reptiles will be used and they are not cheap. Lack of UV light can cause soft shell disease to set in.

Water quality is highly important as turtles are very messy. You must also clean the tank regularly and the water has to be deep enough to allow the turtle room to swim freely. The aquarium should include a land mass to bask on. You also need to maintain the temperatures of both the air and water.

Feeding Turtles

Turtle food, believe it or not, is not recommended as the sole source of nutrients for your pet turtle. Also keep in mind that as their lifecycles change their food needs change with them as do their likes and dislikes so it’s best to offer a good variety of foods.

Separate bowls also help if you have more than one turtle so you can keep track of their food intake.

With that said for the right owner turtles can make wonderful, interesting pets. When you are going to buy a turtle make sure you properly research the species you are planning on buying so you know what special needs they may have or any sort of tips and tricks the pet store people didn’t know.

While turtle care is fairly standard between species each species may have special needs. New turtle parents should look for turtles that are made out of sturdy stuff like red eared sliders, cooters, mud and musk.

Sliders and cooters can reach nearly a foot long while the others mentioned grow to half that. Noobs should also stay clear of larger, more aggressive turtles like snapping turtles.
